Why does the NFL have lame broadcasting rules?

So I was watching the Giants Falcons game and during overtime the Giants had the ball around the Falcons 20 yard line. I think it was 3rd down and suddenly FOX cut the feed and said that "due to NFL rules" they could not show anymore of the game. I get very tired of this sort of thing happening week after week. Does anyone know why the NFL does this? Thanks
